In 2003, my family had a crisis that destroyed the structure and dynamics of the family system as we knew it. For a year, I tried to hold the family together and “save” everyone. Despite my efforts, the family dynamics changed and the structure still crumbled. Consequently, I became very sick and needed surgery. My health crisis helped me realize that I needed to change my perceptions and subsequent behaviors in order to ensure that my own health and well-being would no longer be compromised. So I began studyingwith a woman named Suzanne Scurlock in Reston, VA who, after teaching CranioSacral therapy at the Upledger Institute for years, developed the modality, “Healing From The Core; Grounding and Healthy Boundaries”. I learned from her how to remain grounded and calm when I or my client experience strong emotions. I can remain empathetic without being triggered by the client’s pain, grief or anger. This modality taught me how to facilitate the healing process without violating the client’s boundaries or compromising mine. I was taught how to hold a 'therapeutic' or 'healing' space for someone else while maintaining a calm and centered presence.
Over the years, I have learned so much about how to tell the difference between what is my “stuff” and what is not and how to use this knowledge in every day life. I no longer get entangled in other people's business. I am able to set boundaries with my husband and friends, patients and clients.. I am deeply respectful of this work and how it has improved the quality of my life on every level.
To learn more about this modality; Suzanne Scurlock has authored two very important books on the subject:
